Easter Bonnets: For the Love of Hats

I have always been fond of hats, maybe because I carry them well, or perhaps because I feel more poshly refined when donning a fetching hat, but they are such a feminine accessory that I think every woman should have at least one in her wardrobe...even if she never wears it. Simply having a delicious hat in a pretty hatbox ready for a special occasion ads to the psyche of a lady in a positive fashion...from one extreme to another.

Well, I am familiar with horse hair extensions for both the mane and tail and creativity runs wild here in the horse world, too!

This pretty girl, graceful as she is, SO reminds me of the song, "Oh My Darlin', Oh My Darlin, Oh My Darlin', Clementine!!!..." yet SO Betty Paige as well...

And this gorgeous guy has no idea how rad he looks sportin' his Rasta do, but if he only knew how...ahem...cool he actually looks.

If you are looking for a temporary extension style for a special event, night out on the town, proms, wedding, etc make for a very hot accessory! Easy to apply and you can do it yourself. As with any type of hair extension application, you will get what you pay for in quality and appearance. Some people are content with an inexpensive quick fix which you can mail order or purchase at the local beauty supply, and some people prefer higher quality custom designed clip-in hair extensions created to their individual specifications.

A number of my own clients have created a collection of clip-in hair extensions to fit their moods and style for the day. Length, density, color, texture, curly or not, and style can change with your own creativity and daily wardrobe selection.

So just as one might collect shoes and handbags...why not create a clip-in hair extension wardrobe, too?

Differences in hair textures and quality is extreme. After personally working with a wide variety of types of hair and being exposed to a huge array of quality I would like to think that I can tell by now what is fine quality and what is not.

One of the secrets to creating a fantastically realistic head of hair is to make sure that the blend of the clients hair and the attached hair is a natural merge. Most of my clients prefer to invest in a higher quality of hair, which will not only appear more luxurious but will also last longer with a reusable application method and proper maintenance.

Hair that leaves a coating after gliding it between your between your fingers is without a doubt hair that has been heavily treated and coated, and most likely has been stripped of the cuticles and coated to give the illusion of cuticle hair. This is a very temporary illusion, as the outer coating will wear off after only one or two shampoos, and should you use a flat iron or curling iron you will melt it off all the quicker!

Working with natural virgin hair, whether it is of Russian origin, Brazilian, Argentinian, or Indian origin is a true pleasure and a real joy.

Each application method requires it's own type of tools, and you are basically going to find the exact same tools all over the internet marketed on different sites, yet at various prices, which will depend on whether you are a professional or a consumer using a DIY method, and of course where you find them.

Although I have my own preferences of tools, I am not going to recommend any at this time. But I will say it is important that you keep in mind the care and safety of the hair, work with tools that are within your experience range, and allow you to work comfortably and assuredly with ease and speed!

Beautiful Hair Extension Addiction

A long time client of mine was so thrilled this morning after we removed her extensions and she realized how much her own hair had actually grown after wearing her extensions and maintaining them properly over the past 2 1/2 years that she decided that she did not want for me to put her fresh new hair in. Forgoing wearing extensions after a period of time is usually a very difficult hurdle to overcome unless a person is ready for a new feel and variation of her (or his) look. Even for a person who has had extensions to help them get through a bad or disappointing haircut or style change, abandoning hair extensions is very difficult to do!

I was happy to color, shape, and style her rich natural healthy hair and watch her as she decided to go on her merry way. Since her beautiful new healthy 20 inch custom ordered extensions had not been applied and just tucked them gently safe away for her in her little pouch (I keep a personal compartment for each client). She is a professional cheer leader and I KNEW I would hear from her before too long...

I just didn't think it would be so soon! Here I am, 2am and just finished an 11:30pm emergency fitting appointment.

Trust me, hair extensions are an addiction!

Million Dollar Hair. Someone scooped up THAT domain a while back, but that doesn't mean they offer million dollar hair at all. In fact, I don't believe they have anything to do with hair.

So...What is MILLION DOLLAR HAIR? Million Dollar Hair is YOUR perception.

To me, Million Dollar Hair moves, it's rich, it's yummy to the touch and is simply gorgeous. It's sexy, sophisticated, and flattering beyond belief. It could be natural or not. Anyway you wear it, if you feel like a million bucks it 's Million Dollar Hair! It's a HUGE part of the entire package, and it makes you feel like a million bucks!

For myself as much as for my clients, I expect hair that looks like nothing less than awesome. What do I give my clients? I give my clients what I hope they perceive as Million Dollar Hair, the same as I expect for myself.

Have you made your New Year's resolutions? Have you begun to carry them out yet? A few days ago I was talking with a fellow stylist who mentioned how slow business always is for her at this time of the year, and looking back at the beginning of my styling career, could easily relate. After experiencing my one and only slow post holiday season I never had another and made sure it would never happen again. It is actually really simple, and there are so many ways to market. I have a really sweet referral program, I offer the 10th haircut for free, when clients purchase X amount of products they receive X a percentage discount, etc..

So I asked my friend how often she handed out her business cards and was shocked to hear her tell me how rarely she did so. It is SO easy to make it regular habit, and to ensure you will receive new clients offer first time clients a free haircut. When business is slow, what do you have to lose? I still offer free haircuts simply as a way to say "thank YOU for your patronage!" The first haircut I charge for so the second one is free.

DCP is a great economical place to go for cards, but if you want to invest in something more memorable I feel it's worth the expense to invest in cards that leave a lasting impression. I have really nice clear frosted plastic business cards that are quite impressive and a great way to make an impact when handing out, but let me warn you they are quite expensive. Then I also have my DCP for appointment cards and for handing out at the end of every appointment with the next scheduled appointment on the back.

But hand out those cards! It works!

Frauds and Scams Exposed

Today I am writing on a topic off the path of beauty, but directed to anyone who uses the internet. It pertains to all that do.I truly hope this post reaches many many people out there, whether you are in the hair, beauty or fashion industry...or any other. It does NOT matter who you are or what you do, because this is for all the unsuspecting individuals who are open prey for the crooks trying to pull mail fraud/check fraud scams.

I have been contacted on numerous occasions with all kinds of different letters from people asking for assistance and telling me how I will financially benefit by lending my compassionate help. They usually come in email form from a supposedly foreign country and involve a death, or a terminal illness, or a terrible demise, or some such heart tugging story to play on the potential victim's emotions, tugging at the heart strings, but more so, promising riches.

A couple weeks ago, the 30th of Nov. to be exact, I received a request for my services for a holiday photo shoot for a publication that started out innocently enough, yet SCREAMED SCAM:

"We are in need of Hairstylists for Xmas and New Year edition of our Magazine,Please get back to me as soon as possible if you are interested,For further information send me an email to "_____________"
Thanks"

( RED FLAG ! First off; improper grammar and spelling alerted me, but most simply this is just not professional, almost to the point of being a joke)

Then the following day I received:

"Hi my name is "________________ " Am freelance agent working for a New Magazine Company,We are recruiting Hairstylists for female first Magazine currently wanting Hairstylists for Xmas and New Year special edition of the magazine.We saw your profile as a Good Hairstylists while surfing the internet, We appreciate it and I would you to help me to some works.We presently have good offer for you. We want to know if you are interested in Hairstylists work because we need good and professional Hairstylists to help us with our models who will be on the magazine cover the Xmas and New Year edition.Please let us know if you are interested in this Job.You stand a chance of making reasonable $750 from this deal to start,and even a noticeable fame. Let us know if you are interested in my offer and We would give you further details.you could Get back to us asap....

Thanks"

My next RED FLAG question was "aren't you a little late? Christmas publications? You must be talking about 2009!". Obviously a scam. And the list goes on and on, but I'll save you the drama.

Just PLEASE, be careful! Protect yourself and use good common sense. A good scam artist is slick and sly, so don't allow yourself to be taken in. Crooks and criminals don't care who they prey on.

If you think you have been contacted in reference to a scam do your research and reporting to protect yourself, and in consideration of other innocent potential victims.

Simplicity is Elegance

It is no secret that simplicity is elegance, or that a little goes a long way. The simplicity of the perfect little black dress accompanied by a classic chignon hairstyle with just the perfect hair accessory says "BLING!" with understated class, elegance, and style.

If you choose to go heavier on adorned attire, you may want to consider keeping accessories to a minimum, perhaps just a couple or a few single-crystal hairpins strategically placed in a sophisticated simple style. For the simple little black dress (or, as I prefer, a deep rich emerald or forest green at this time of year) dressers, you can accessorize more elaborately, but keep in mind to keep it elegant, whatever your style of choice may be. My preference is making a statement with one piece of hair jewelry that pops and says "POW" with an alluring feminine curvature and sparkle.

The reason we dress and accessorize is to attract, not repel; to sparkle, not blind; to enhance, not detract.

Personally, I love decor. Take me shopping and don't show me the price tags, but 99.99% of the time I will select the most expensive item, which is usually not the most elaborate, but that one perfect piece of adornment says so much more than an entire basket of gems. One of my favorite motto's is K.I.S.S.; Keep It Simple, Stupid! It's true and it always works, so when in doubt just K.I.S.S.!

But no matter what your style, remember always, to be yourself, because when you are comfortable with being you in your own skin your confidence and comfort is really all you need to shine and sparkle, and then YOU will naturally be the biggest "BLING BLING!" of all.

Hair to Make You Smile

What is the purpose of wearing hair extensions, or a new hair style for that matter? For most of us it is to feel better about ourselves and be comfortable and confident in our appearance, but once the styles are designed, or the extensions are applied, being able to work with your hair to recreate the vision you were pleased with when you left the salon is up to you at home.

Most of the time your stylist will be more than happy to walk you through the process of what products and styling aids are being used to create your look. And yes, proper use of the proper products for your hair are essential to achieve your desired outcome. Guiding you through the proper blow drying techniques, what brushes to use, and flat or curling iron, will take some practice and getting use to at home, but with a little bit of time and patience you will be able to recreate your salon image.

It is important to understand that a good style will not last forever and a fresh cut or extension application is always going to require regular routine maintenance and visits to your professional. Just as a haircut and color requires refreshing every 4 to 8 weeks to maintain that fresh coiffed feel, look and polish, understand that hair extensions do as well.

Hippie Hair...Is It Making a Comeback?

As all trends and fads hair is making it's way back to the hippie hair styles of the 60's. In fact, some of the hippie fads have never left. Has the flower child era returned? I don't believe so. History can't repeat itself to that extent but fashion certainly can re-invent the styles which were once deemed as beauty such as...

1. Hip huggers

2. Peace symbols

3. Headbands

4. Halter tops and tube tops

5. Fringe detailing

6. Tattered patched jeans

7. Bare feet (withOUT the pedicures!)

8. Long straight hair

And that's just to name a few of the mentionables!

Hippie hair? It, too, is making it's return to the long easy maintenance styles of the 60's. Well, easy maintenance for those that weren't then cursed with big natural curly hair. I remember the stories of some women painfully ironing their hair with an actual iron and ironing board, or set it on old fashioned orange juice cans to pull the kink and frizz out. Crazy, what we do for style...

Wild hair would see it's day of fame and would become the hit of the glam rock era, which our fashion industry has probably thought to keep in the vault for a few more years...

Paris Fashion Week - Ooooh La La!

I am huge on Gianfranco Ferrer' and John Paul Gautier, but this one was over the top...literally!...taken by John Galliano in the hair department. As POW-erful as his creations are, the hair is such the POW factor here, and gives the word POWerful an entirely new meaning as the artistic designer evolves the Pirate theme in his ready to wear (hair not included) line for Spring 2009.

Here we go again, another political emabarrassment! Now the fashion industry has mocked us with gentle comparison reference to the new line from Herme's by commenting "What is it with this fake "down home" country as value resurgance we are seeing these days and no we aren't talking about America's hokiest Vice Presidential candidate." In my opinion the Haute Couture world is in your face honest when weighed against the facade the down home image a past beauty pageant contestant now running for VP is grasping for. With fashion we know what it is; wild fun flamboyant creativity that makes a great party...and maybe a few harmless cat walk cat-fights.

And while we're here let's give it up for Tina Fey! Here's a shout out atchya, and all the rest of the fantastic crew there witchya at SNL!

Well, I say take those gloves off and put ON them heels and get real, or else defend your position and take them heels off and back on with them gloves, the way they do it down home...or rather 'up home' in this instance.... pitbull-hockey-mom style.

Hair Hats - Dog-Face Takes On a New Meaning!

It's unimaginable what a wildly creative mind can do, even if you regularly think outside of the box. I stumbled across Hair Hats by the recently late Japanese art director Nagi Noda, numerous unusual and unique headpieces inspired by creatures such as lions, rabbits, poodles, owls, and elephants, lions, rhinos and more. Weird? Yes. Personally I would not want an elephant, rhino, or any other creature sitting on top of my head. Quite an oddly bizarre display of head-wear, but on the other hand this would be a dull world if we all thought the same.

Are They, or Are They Not?

It's a simple question with a simple answer.

A great head of hair extensions is a head of hair where the extensions are completely undetectable no matter what the style of choice is for the day. So oftentimes I see a head of hair extensions and just cringe. I can't stand to see a head of stringy individual strands when, even curled, fall in a very unrealistic fashion. Correctly applied and maintained hair extensions will have that natural smooth soft bouncy flow that is oh-so-sexy and healthy looking!

Hence the importance of knowing and understanding that it is an investment of time and care to maintain that chosen image of perfection when donning hair extensions, and I can never stress enough the importance of high end quality hair.

Even with an untrained eye, after pointing out the obvious it does not take a professional to see the difference between good extensions and bad. If you even question, then they are, and they are bad.

So the answer to "are they, or are they not?" is ; Bad hair extensions are extensions you recognize as extensions. Good hair extensions you would never ever know!

Hair on Vacation

Took a bit of a vacation and don't know that I can say it feels good to be back, but I'm back! So since I took myself on vacation naturally I took my hair along for the ride, too. And we all fared very well! BUT I forgot to take my shampoo. I opted to wear removable wefts for this trip since I wasn't going to be doing any water sports or serious activity, in which case I would have had individual extensions applied before leaving. Being able to remove them each night was great, and I did wash them very gingerly a couple of nights with a good moisturizing shampoo, and followed that up with the detangler, both by Aquage. Thank goodness I had my spray on leave-in with me, because that really saves the hair and prolongs the integrity of it. I have a client that swears by baby shampoo, but I would only use it in a pinch. It's time for a serious shampoo and intensive conditioning. My choice of product istested and manufactured specifically for cut hair, yet also works remarkably well for highlighted and bleached hair, or any extreme processed hair, but all went well and now it's back to the real world for me and my hair!

A few years back I was at an impromptu jam session held in a small club/bar in Old Sacramento and it was awesome to see long hair rockin'! The venue was intimate and the spontaneous party was charged with incredible high voltage energy. And the hair was flying...I'm talking the kind of hair that just made you melt. Not banker hair by a long (no pun intended) shot!

There's just something about a rocker with hair, long wild rock star hair, swishing and waving with the beat that says 'I'm a free spirit'. It's sexy. Yeah...

It's To Your Benefit !

Consultations are necessary before making a decision about hair extensions. It is important to know first off if you are a candidate for hair extensions. (It breaks my heart when I have to tell someone that their hair won't support extensions but the truth is that not everyone is a candidate...but that's an entirely different topic for later...)

You also need to meet the stylist and become assured that they are an experienced extensionist and not just a good salesman...or woman! I strongly suggest selecting someone that is also a licensed stylist and not someone simply versed in hair extensions. Top companies, such as DreamCatchers, Great Lengths, Cinderella Hair, Shrink Links, etc. will only work with and train licensed stylists for a couple of reasons, number one being that a licensed stylist has been educated to know hair and secondly to preserve the integrity of our industry. But that is NOT to say that everyone who is an extensionist must be a licensed stylist and is not good at what they do.

During your consultation ask to see hair samples, before and after photos, establish the total cost of the complete service and any additional services you may require. Find out about home maintenance, what products to use, and frequency of salon maintenance. Take this time to ask all the questions you have, and listen to everything the stylist needs to share and explain. Use your consultation time wisely, because it is just as much for your benefit as for your new stylist to gather necessary information!

When selecting the color of hair to be applied take a good look at samples in a natural lighted area. Better yet, go outside with a hand-held mirror and the color ring and let the stylist hold up sample variations to your own hair to make certain in natural daylight.

Be prepared to make a deposit to reserve your service, your date, and to secure your order. Usually the deposit is 50% of the total extension service cost. Normally your deposit is non-refundable so be sure of yourself before you commit. But speaking from personal experience, hair extensions are a commitment well worth having!

Nightmare Hair!

What a screwed up way to start the day! I had the worst dream last night that my own hair was clinging to my hands as I ran my hands through it and was falling out by the handfuls! It was a nightmare, to say the least. I woke in a complete panic and ran to the mirror to see if there was something that had happened in my sleep that I was unaware of. Was I abducted by aliens? Did my cat chew it all off? Did it become a huge nasty tangled glob?

Thank God it is still all there. I can relax...Whew!...wonder what the subliminal message was...

Sweet Summer Heat

Does anybody else feel like too much hair is just TOO much hair at this time of year? When the temperature rises I reduce the amount of hair I personally wear, but maintain enough to have the usual sex appeal. Still need to have enough to pull back and up in a ponytail, but that ponytail has got to still be fresh and 'swingy'. And there is nothing like diving into the water and having that mermaid-hair feeling, even if it IS braided down the back!

When swimming, surfing, water skiing, biking...or whatever your sport of choice might be...be sure to pull back and braid your hair after using a leave in conditioner. DON'T FORGET THE CONDITIONER!! If you are really active in the water it doesn't hurt to use a heavier conditioner without rinsing before you braid it. Of course, nothing is as protective for your hair as wearing a swim cap, but I know that's like really pulling a rabbit out of hat to get anyone to do that! If you are the rare one that doesn't mind wearing a cap, still use conditioner applying it more thoroughly on the ends than closer to the scalp. Too close to the scalp and the connecting point of the extensions can cause the extensions to loosen and slip.

If you feel you can't reduce the amount of hair you usually wear at this time of year, you still can reduce the heat just by being creative with your daily styling routine. Play with it and try clipping part of it up and out of the way on top of your head with a few little sexy strands 'naturally' (tehehehehe!) flowing out, or try wearing hair bands for a change. There are lots of fun sexy things you can do with it if you try.

A woman's mane IS her crowning glory, and a man's as well in many cases. The power of a beautiful head of hair can not be denied. But how do you see your hair, and how do you WANT to see your hair? For the best results, I can't stress enough the importance of photos, either personal or print. Usually magazine photos are much easier to relate to for everyone, and communication is the key to giving everyone what they want. With a photo to go by there is nothing left to the imagination and wondering what the outcome is going to be. When a client is going to make a substantial investment in her appearance the outcome can't be left to question because when and if that should happen the stylist ends up with a huge problem on her hands. All it takes is one disgruntled client to complain that she did not get what she wanted to ruin the day...and the week, or even longer for that matter! But how can you give your client what she wants if she doesn't know what she wants? Well, I strongly suggest that if your client can not decide on what she wants that this might be a client you would want to pass on because chances are she is not going to be happy with anything you give her if she doesn't know for herself and the two of you can't decide together.

A pleasant alternative in a situation like this is instead of investing in a semi permanent method which requires time, budget, home and salon maintenance, I offer the service of custom clip in extensions. In fact a client can have an entire wardrobe of textures and shades to go with her changing moods and emotions, and at least try out different lengths and styles until she knows for certain what she wants. For some clients this alternative works very well. So for clients that indecisive but are willing to invest I offer beautiful custom blend hand tied clip in extensions. The service they are receiving is still tailored individually, and completely custom. Quality will still require an investment, but it won't be appearance one is committed to daily.

Not everyone has the luxury of time and budget to have hair extensions fitted and removed as often and leisurely as the adorable Ms. Paris Hilton or Ms. Spears, but there are always pleasant alternatives to present and work with for everyone.

Don't Blow The Image!

As I was waiting in line at the post office the other day I couldn't help but notice the terrible extensions being sported by a very attractive and saucy young lady. She had everything going for her in the looks department, and was dressed in designer wear from head to her perfectly French-pedicured Jimmy Choo's-adorned toes, swinging her LV handbag from her young diamond-decorated wrist for the rest of the PO patrons to...perhaps be impressed by? Exquisite skin, perfect little trim figure, a charming smile and a confident sparkling voice. So what happened to her hair ? ! ? ! ? !

As adorable as she was I could not take my eyes off of her ratty looking hair! All her positive attributes aside, I could not tear my eyes away from her bizarre stringy hair that simply did not go with the rest of the program and belied her attempt at appearing as a perfectly put together well-to-do young lady. To my eye they were obviously individual hair extensions, and quite horrific ones at that. For the layman it may have appeared she was having a VERY bad hair day or that she had just managed to neglect that part of her personal maintenance that particular day. For myself, knowing hair and clients, as well put together as she appeared to be this was an area that she had not devoted enough thought or time...or budget!...to. To myself it was apparent that she was not having quality hair applied and that she was not keeping up on her hair extension maintenance regime as is absolutely mandatory. The amount of hair applied was minimum so that the blend between her natural hair and the extensions was obvious to me, not to mention the texture did not blend and the colors were completely off. The amount of hair that was applied in an effort to give her length and volume pathetically left gaps between each drab limp frizzy strand. The quality was so poor a bird would not have even used it for a nest, and there was more natural swing going on with her LV handbag than with the straw dangling from her head!

Poor thing. I was SO tempted to give her my card, but then I certainly did not want to offend or embarrass her in public. After all, she had put a tremendous amount of effort into portraying the image of being a very well put together woman. And had almost succeeded!

As I was walking out of the PO I noticed her standing next to her shiny little black BMW getting her keys out, with one of her straw strands limply hanging on, a few inches lower down the middle of her back than the rest. At this point I took the opportunity to stop and politely flatter her overall appearance and interject an introduction, tell her who I am and what I do..."and by the way, would you be offended if I told you that you have an extension that is falling out as we speak?" She blushed profusely, but hey, it's not as if it were simply her collar tag sticking out! She stammered and thanked me and said she would be visiting my website and scheduling an appointment with me, but we shall see...

A Very Cool Day Ahead

Today is an awesome day, with two new extension clients and a celebrity consultation to look forward to! Everyone who sits in my chair is special, but part of the fun in this industry is the broad expanse of personalities and life styles we come in contact with. No two days are alike, there is always something new and different taking place, someone wanting a change, someone needing to smile, and not to mention the stories from each client since their previous appointment.

Clients become family and that's why it is so important that not only are they happy in my chair with my level and quality of skill and product, but that we have a nice blend personality wise. That doesn't mean we need to be of the same mold and agree on everything, but that we enjoy and respect each other for who we are, what each represents.

Being a very easy going and a positive open minded individual it comes natural to have a pleasantly friendly and sincere communication with everyone. As an independent contractor and an entrepeneur I will always maintain an enjoyable environment and a peaceful space, but that is really easy to do when each day you surround yourself with a natural positive attitude.

So it's a great day ahead with new clients and friends to be made...hope yours is a great one, too!

You will eventually be able to come here to read about hair extensions, enhancements, integrations, and replacement systems from a professional point of view as well as consumer. Experiences, observations, stories, dilemmas, resolutions, etc. will be a part of this fun and professional journal.

Reference to being an expert means I am confident at an expert level in various aspects of hair extension methods and applications as well as acquiring an immense knowledge of products over the past years, but this title does not by any means indicate I know everything! It is exciting to me to create beauty and be able to instill confidence for my clients, and I do so by combining my many years of experience and massive education along with my artistic eye for style, fashion and design. I must admit, I am a perfectionist almost to a fault and my own worst critic, so this also earns me the right of self-reference as an expert.
